HARARE, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Commission of Inquiry into post-election violence in Zimbabwe on Monday urged citizens to desist from denigrating the establishment of the commission by President Emmerson Mnangagwa as well as the commissioners.

Commission spokesperson John Masuku said citizens must appreciate that the commission was appointed in terms of the laws of the land.

The commission is also disturbed by people who attack and denigrate the integrity, professional ability and reputation of some commissioners and the prerogative of the appointing authority who is the Head of State and Government.

"It should be borne in mind that President Emmerson Mnangagwa saw it fit to appoint the current Commissioners to carry out this national task in terms of the laws of the land," Masuku said in a statement.

The remarks by the commission come after a number of opposition activists, while testifying, have criticized the establishment of the commission as well as some of the commissioners.

Masuku also urged police to fully investigate allegations by a journalist that he was viciously attacked on social media and threatened in person after testifying before the commission last Thursday.

The commission reiterated that its full commitment to protecting all citizens who appear before it through law enforcement agents.

The seven-member commission, chaired by former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, was appointed by Mnangagwa in August to investigate post election violence that rocked Harare on Aug. 1, resulting in the death of six people.

The commission began its work in September.
