Brexit white paper an evolution, not a solution: Irish PM

DUBLIN, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar on Friday described the British government's white paper on Brexit as an evolution of its position, but not a solution.

His comments came one day after the British government published a white paper on Brexit, which sets out the details of the deal it wants with the European Union (EU) after it leaves the block in the next year.

Varadkar said the Brexit white paper is something that can be included in the negotiations on the future relationship between the EU and Britain.

He reminded people of a possible "no-deal" Brexit scenario, as warned by the EU at its summit held in Brussels two weeks ago.

"It's not that we think that's a likely scenario ... but we think it's prudent that every member state should plan for the worst," he told local media RTE while attending a meeting on rural development issues in the country's western county of Mayo.

He said his cabinet would hold a meeting next week to discuss the issue related to a no-deal Brexit scenario and would produce some documents after the meeting.

He said that though Ireland was not preparing for a border between Britain's Northern Ireland and Ireland, which will remain in the EU after Brexit, it still needed to make preparations for changes at its ports and airports.

"At some stage in the future, there may need to be checks that don't currently exist," he said.

Ireland has insisted on no physical infrastructure for customs controls and checks along its border with Northern Ireland after Britain's withdrawal from the EU.

The country has repeatedly expressed its position that there will be no withdrawal agreement if there is no legally binding agreement between the EU and Britain to avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland after Brexit.
