BRUSSELS, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission on Wednesday unveiled two new strategies, "Apply AI Strategy" and "AI in Science Strategy," aimed at accelerating the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe's industry and scientific research.
The "Apply AI Strategy" covers sectors including healthcare and pharmaceuticals, energy, mobility, manufacturing, construction, agri-food, defense, communications, and culture.
Specific measures include establishing AI-powered advanced medical screening centers, and supporting the development of frontier models and agentic AI tailored for industries such as manufacturing and environmental protection. The Commission said it is mobilizing around 1 billion euros (1.16 billion U.S. dollars) to implement these initiatives.
The "AI in Science Strategy" outlines measures such as allocating 58 million euros within the pilot phase of the virtual institute Resource for AI Science in Europe (RAISE) to train, retain, and attract AI science talent.
"We will drive this 'AI-first' mindset across all our key sectors, from robotics to healthcare, energy and automotive," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.
According to data from Eurostat, in 2024, only 13.5 percent of EU-based enterprises with at least 10 employees were using AI technologies in their daily operations. (1 euro = 1.16 U.S. dollar) ■
