WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced Wednesday that the United States will terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Venezuelan nationals.
The 2021 designation is set to expire on Sept. 10, with the termination becoming effective 60 days after publication in the Federal Register.
The Department of Homeland Security said that interagency reviews found conditions in Venezuela no longer justify TPS, which shields beneficiaries from deportation and allows them to work legally in the United States.
Venezuelans are being directed to use a departure program offering travel assistance and limited financial incentives.
This move comes despite recent court rulings questioning earlier attempts by the administration of President Donald Trump to roll back protections. Legal challenges are expected to continue as the administration prepares to proceed with deportations. ■
