LONDON, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Striker Alexander Isak has bid farewell to Newcastle United after completing a British record 125 million-pound (167 million U.S. dollars) move to Liverpool on transfer deadline day.
The Swedish international described it as "an honor" to represent Newcastle, thanking the club's supporters in a heartfelt message as he departs Tyneside.
Isak joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and quickly became a key figure. His most memorable moment came in March when he scored in the Carabao Cup final to help Newcastle defeat Liverpool 2-1 and secure its first major trophy in 70 years.
Despite his success, the 25-year-old requested a move during the summer and did not feature in the current campaign after being frozen out of the first-team squad amid reports he had refused to play to force the transfer.
The club confirmed his exit with a short statement on its official website, while Isak posted a longer personal reflection before starting his new chapter at Anfield.
"I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together," Isak wrote on Instagram.
"Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honor to be part of the journey, from reaching the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years. Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle," he added. ■
