LOS ANGELES, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros. presentation of Apple Original Films' "F1 The Movie" sped to No. 1 at the North American box office in its debut weekend, according to data released Sunday by measurement firm Comscore.
The sports drama film grossed 55.6 million U.S. dollars in North America this weekend for a global cume of 144 million dollars through Sunday.
The action-packed feature film, starring Brad Pitt and directed by Joseph Kosinski, follows a race-car driver who comes out of retirement for one last shot at saving a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse.
"F1 The Movie" holds an 83 percent approval rating based on 252 reviews on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It also received an "A" grade from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore, which uses a standard scale from A+ to F.
Universal's presentation of DreamWorks Animation's fantasy film "How to Train Your Dragon" came in second on its third weekend with 19.4 million dollars.
Rounding out the top three, Pixar's animated film "Elio" took in 10.7 million dollars on its second weekend for a North American total of 42.2 million dollars. ■
