KABUL, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A new residential township for returning immigrants in western Afghanistan's Herat province has been launched, the office of the provincial government announced on Sunday.
Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi, acting deputy prime minister for administrative affairs of Afghanistan's interim government, has laid the foundation stone for the project, said the office.
The township spans 6,000 acres of land in the Zendajan district and will include essential facilities such as housing, healthcare services, education, and basic infrastructure, it noted.
The office cited Hanafi as saying that the interim government has allocated 35 townships for returnees across 25 provinces, with construction taking place in a number of them, while others are in the process of being mapped, planned, and designed.
The Afghan interim government previously launched residential townships for returnees in several other provinces, including Helmand, Ghazni, Paktia, Faryab, Paktika, Kunar, Balkh, Kunduz, and Kandahar.
Over 1.2 million Afghans have returned from neighboring Iran and Pakistan so far in 2025, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. ■
