KAMPALA, July 9 (Xinhua) -- South Sudanese President Salva Kiir on Monday met his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni, a day after Uganda hosted a meeting aimed at ending fighting in the country.

A State House statement issued here said visiting Salva Kiir met Museveni at State House Entebbe, 40km south of the capital Kampala where they discussed matters of mutual cooperation between the two countries.

Kiir, according to the statement, thanked Museveni for facilitating the tripartite summit that took place over the weekend which was geared towards finding peace in South Sudan.

The summit was attended by Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, Kiir, South Sudan rebel leader Riek Machar and other opposition groups in South Sudan.

No official communication has been made about the outcome of the summit but local media reports show that the summit discussed a governance structure where Machar will be the First Vice President.

Violence broke out in South Sudan in December 2013 after soldiers loyal to Kiir clashed with those belonging to the faction of Machar, who was then the vice president.

The civil war has left tens of thousands of South Sudanese dead and around four million others displaced.
