NATO needs to adapt to changing security situation: NATO chief

WARSAW, May 28 (Xinhua) -- NATO needs to continuously adapt to security situations as they become more and more demanding, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday, during the Spring Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Among the topics raised during the NATO meeting was cooperation between NATO and the EU, Russia, modernization of NATO, including changing the command structure, fighting terrorism, and ensuring stability.

A stronger European Union meant a stronger NATO, Stoltenberg said in his speech, adding it was however crucial to make sure that the EU's efforts do not duplicate NATO's efforts, but complements them.

Stoltenberg also expressed hope that heads of state and government will decide during the upcoming summit to strengthen readiness and mobility of armed forces.

The upcoming July summit will mostly focus on accelerating the troops transfer through the Atlantic and within Europe.

According to Stoltenberg, despite some political and historical differences existing between members recently, including issues such as the Paris climate agreement, trade agreements or the nuclear agreement with Iran, NATO will continue to perform its commitment to collective defense.

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly was founded in 1955 and is composed of national members of parliament from all 29 NATO member countries.
