Kenya eyes Main Cup rugby trophy in London, Paris legs

NAIROBI, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Winning the Main Cup trophy in one of the two remaining legs of World Series will add the glow to the performance that Kenya Sevens rugby team has had this season.

Kenya Sevens team Captain Oscar Ouma said on Friday that the team returned to training ahead of the London and Paris legs of the World Series.

The team will also have to bring on their best performance if they are to wade through the murky group stages of the World Cup in June in San Francisco, USA.

"We started the season with a target to hit the 100 point mark in the overall standing. With two legs remaining and at 93 points, that is within our grasp. But it will have good feeling effect for Shujaa to win a cup to wrap up their beautiful season," Ouma said in Nairobi.

Kenya last won the Main Cup trophy at the Singapore Sevens in 2016 and have on two occasions come close to reaching the title this season in Vancouver, Canada and Hong Kong where they were eliminated by Fiji in the finals. Kenya also failed to win a medal at this year's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

But that failure is what inspires the captain to dream of winning one of the two remaining legs to crown their season as they head to San Francisco for the World Cup.

In London, Kenya will face similar opponents as they did in Singapore after they were pooled alongside the England team, USA and France to be played on June 2.

Kenya, which currently sits sixth on the series log with 93 points, will rely on the consistency showed by country's top try scorer Collins Injera.

"He is one of the best sevens' players in the world and having him in top form is quite a benefit to the team," said head coach Innocent Simiyu.

With target almost achieved, Simiyu has confirmed he will reshuffle their game plan and play style in the two remaining rounds. Kenya is used to playing an expansive style of play which is more physical.

"We are going to develop a new style of play," he said. Shujaa collected 29 points in their last two legs after finishing runners-up in Hong Kong and seventh in Singapore.
