RABAT, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Morocco's King Mohammed VI on Saturday congratulated Miguel Diaz-Canel on his election as the new Cuban president.

In a message of congratulations, the Moroccan king extended to Diaz-Canel his heartfelt congratulations and sincere wishes of full success in conducting his mission for Cuba's further progress and prosperity.

The king also voiced Morocco's strong determination to open a new page in bilateral relations with Cuba, serving the common interests of the two friendly peoples, and contributing to the strengthening of South-South cooperation.

After nearly four decades of severance over the Western Sahara issue, Morocco and Cuba signed last year a joint statement on the re-establishment of the relationships at the level of ambassadors at the United Nations.

Morocco has already appointed new ambassador to Havana, the capital of Cuba.
