Kenya considers hosting boxing training camp with Uganda

NAIROBI, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Kenya is considering a joint training camp in Nairobi for Kenyan and Ugandan boxers ahead of the Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast in Australia from April 4-15.

Both countries have not had good fortunes at the recent Olympic and Commonwealth Games. However, the Ugandan Boxing Federation (UBF) believes a joint training session will boost their chances of winning medals at the Gold Coast.

UBF president Moses Muhanji said Kenya has better facilities and coaches and they would benefit a lot if they were granted a chance to train together.

"We are neighbors and share a lot together. A joint training session will help cement this relationship of mutual benefit," he said on Wednesday. "We are [coming] from a boxing tournament in Dar es Salaam and our team did well."

The Tanzania tournament was a learning curve for the Ugandan team but ahead of their residential training camp in Kampala, Muhanji wants Kenya to host them for a week to gauge their boxers' ability.

Kenya's Boxing Association boss John Kameta, however said they will review their request and confirm if it is possible to share a training venue and learn from each other.

Uganda's last medal in boxing at the Commonwealth Games was in 2002 in Manchester, where they claimed two silver medals through Joseph Lubega and Mohamed Kayongo.
